Animal and insect pests can wreak havoc on your garden,
stripping the leaves bare and removing beautiful flowers and
produce virtually overnight. Some level of pests is
necessary to support the natural balance of prey and
predator, so the key is control not complete eradication.
Pest control solutions and pest-resistant plants can be
found at online retailers like Gardens Alive! and Brecks.
Synthetic Controls
The old standbys have fallen out of favor with the growing
trend toward natural pest controls that work with the
environment. If you choose to use synthetic products, read
the directions carefully and use them in targeted locations
to limit the damage to the environment and beneficial
insects.
Biological Solutions
The first step is to remove damaged or infested plants and
branches. Then, spray liberally with a botanical pesticide
or insecticidal soap, which is derived from plants. These
can break down quickly and should be reapplied daily when
there are signs of a problem. Other biological solutions
include microbial insecticides made with viruses, bacteria
and other microscopic organisms, and horticultural oils made
with petroleum or vegetable oils. Also, look for plants that
are genetically bred to resist common pests.
Larger Pests
For larger pests like deer, rabbits, dogs and moles, look
for repellents made from predator odors or spicy
ingredients, like hot peppers. Fences and netting are
another great idea. Be sure to place some type of barrier on
the ground around your garden, too, to prevent creatures
from digging under the fence.
