These days, fire resistant or fire proof safes are ‘all the
rave’! So, if you feel like it is a must have purchase it is
good to understand what information, features and key words
to look for while shopping around.
Here are some helpful tips:
Underwriters Laboratories or “UL Listed”
Although a fire proof safe does not require a UL rating, a
reliable product will have one. The rated labeling of an
insulated safe implies the degree of protection the safe
will provide to its contents if exposed to a fire. The most
widely accepted label is issued by Underwriters
Laboratories. Warning: if you see a product that claims,
“tested to UL standards” be weary. This means only that the
product was submitted for UL testing but did not past. If a
product did pass it will say, “UL Listed.”
Figure out how many hours of fire protection do you need
Many well known safe manufacturers will only provide
protection for a fire that lasts one hour. This is not bad
considering that most reputable companies have never had one
of their products fail. What this shows is that a home or
even business fire does not typically last for longer than
one hour. However, there are also 2 and 3 hour safes
available on the market. Keep in mind they will be higher in
price.
What time of other security features do you want?
Ok, so you have bought a fire proof safe. But what other
safety features does it include in the event of a burglary?
What type of locking system does it have? What type of
material is it constructed out of? A reliable safe is always
made of high gauge steel and will have a secure locking
system, such as biometrics fingerprint recognition.
