Buying a home is the biggest investment in a person's life. No other purchase, whether it's a car or an education, has as much emotional attachment as the location where a person may end up spending several years, if not the rest of their life. With that in mind, protecting that investment is top priority. There are many safety issues that threaten a home and a resident's security. It could be fire, natural disaster, carbon monoxide, or burglary. Whatever the case, a homeowner must put safety first. Here are few tips on how to keep your investment safe.

Fire Protection

All new homes should have smoke detectors placed throughout the home in compliance with local building codes. But it is a resident's responsibility to keep those smoke detectors in working condition. Batteries for these units should be checked and replaced regularly. A little maintenance may be the difference between losing your home or it could even be the difference between life and death.

Carbon Monoxide

Like a smoke detector, a carbon monoxide detector is a battery operated device that can be placed in the home to monitor and alert in case of high carbon monoxide readings. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas, yet it is highly toxic. Incomplete combustion of the gas in a furnace, stove, or water heater may cause harmful and toxic levels to enter a home. A carbon monoxide detector will alert when those readings reach harmful levels. Although, like a smoke detector, it is the resident's responsibility to check the batteries and make sure the device is in proper working order.

Natural Disasters

Although many natural disasters can't be prevented against, residents can take precautions by knowing what types of natural disasters their area is prone to and preparing accordingly. Some detection devices are available, like sensors to detect rising water levels in a home. Some homes in high tornado risk areas have reinforced underground rooms or cellars as a safe house during a tornado.

Burglary

There are many precautions homeowner's can take against break-ins and burglary, including home security systems, guard dogs, and even simple things like strong windows and door locks. Some of the more advanced security systems, like ADT for example, will monitor all of the safety issues mentioned above and contact the appropriate authority if a hazard arises.

Because the home is such an important investment, equal importance should be placed on keeping that investment and the lives of the residents safe.
